For our Number (Math) Talk today I asked my 8th graders whether 0 was prime or composite. I had them stand on the side of the room according to their answer. Some wanted to add a “neither” category so we did. Some wanted to add a “both” category so we did. Some wanted to add an “unknown” category so we did. What then proceeded was students talking themselves and their classmates into changing their initial opinions at least a dozen times. I especially love when a student, through the course of defending their choice, convinces herself that she is in the wrong spot. It was a great discussion and in the end the class was happy because I didn’t make them wait until our next class to find out the answer (although I wanted to because it would’ve driven them CRAZY).
